NSWBA profiles our Teams Congress

The May NSWBA eCongress newsletter profiles the club's Swiss Teams Congress held at Peninsula Bridge Club in March.

Annegrete Kolding provided the NSWBA with expanded coverage of the event accompanied with the photos that are displayed in the profile's photo gallery. Annegrete is the channel coordinator of the various NSWBA and Australian Bridge Federation's publication options - please contact her if you think you would like to discuss these options or have some information that could be suitably profiled in one or more of the NSWBA's or ABF's publications.

This is part of an expanded emphasis on streamlining and expanding the internal and external communication channels available to the club.

President’s Letter April 2017

The Committee would like to thank Verl Lawrence, who has done such a marvellous job for 17 years as our Chief Director. Along with her husband John, Verl has contributed to the Club in an amazing way. She has guided our directors in training, directed numerous events over the years, as well as being so friendly and welcoming to members, new and old. On Saturday 29 April, we will be thanking her with an afternoon tea. I hope you can either come to the session to play or drop in at 2pm for a glass of champagne!

Thanks for Verl - Sat 29 Apr

Members flocked to commemorate and thank our wonderful Chief Director, Verl Lawrence, on Saturday 29 April, after she announced her retirement from directing. As well as holding the role of Chief Director for the past 17 years, Verl has held almost all of the office-bearer positions in the Club.

Our president, Sarah Young, thanked Verl on the Club's behalf and presented her with a floral tribute. She also announced in honour of Verl and her husband's past contributions to the club a new competition, to be called the Lawrence Competition, to start in June on Tuesday nights.

Verl thanked the club for the recognition and more importantly for the key role it had been in her life and the support she had received over the years.

Peninsula at Trumps' Good Friday Pairs

Congratulations to Lyn Smith and Cath Whiddon for making the final field and being first of all the Peninsula Pairs who played in the Trumps Good Friday Pairs Congress. A great result - no wonder they're smiling!

Lyn and Cath came 8th in the final field ahead of another Peninsula pair Ian Bailey and Lynn Baker who came 11th. Sixty four pairs competed on the day overall.

Check the results for the final field and you can check the results for the morning session and other fields on the same site.

Verl, our Chief Director, retires

It is with regret that I am resigning from my position as Director and Chief Director at our wonderful club.

My last day of directing duties will be on 29 April.

I joined the club 27 years ago and have served as Tea Lady, Master Point Secretary, Vice President, President and for 17 years as Chief Director.

The 27 years have been most enjoyable and interesting.

Harlequin Teams - Fri 28 April 2017

The Harlequin Teams Day was a great success, with lots of pairs enjoying their first experience of teams play. Pairs who had no or very limited experience of teams play were combined with an experienced pair so that the experienced pair could help them learn about and enjoy the teams experience.

Congratulations go to Team Agostino - Di Agostino, Christine Egan, Yvonne Edwards and Julie Daniel who came first and were presented with well deserved wine and chocolates by Sarah. Check below for the full results and more photos.

Club registers for GST

The Committee wishes to inform all members of some compulsory tax changes which will take effect from 1 September 2017.Peninsula Bridge Club is a non-profit association, but is still subject to taxation rules. We are fortunate to have Bob Whiddon as Treasurer, who is a qualified accountant, and who has been ensuring that the Club meets all its financial responsibilities.

This year our annual turnover reached an annual rate of $150K and as a result, we are required by law to register as a GST entity. This means we must pay GST on our annual subs and table money, but that we also qualify to get a GST refund on GST included in goods and services we pay for. In order to register for GST we are required to first have an Australian Business Number (ABN) and tax file number (TFN). This has now been done and we have registered for GST but have not yet received details on this from the tax office (ATO).
